Celebrity wedding planner David Tutera has revealed how he thought having children would save his failing marriage to Ryan Jurica.
The 47-year-old host of WE TV’s My Fair Wedding, told Barbara Walters on the View, that his relationship had been ‘going poorly for six years’ – a far cry from the ‘fairytale’ he envisioned.
In a bid to ‘make things better’, he and Mr Jurica opted for surrogacy but the drawn-out process took its toll, and by the time they found out they were expecting they had already moved towards divorce.
Despite learning that their surrogate was pregnant with a boy and girl, Mr Tutera and Mr Jurica agreed to end their relationship and each sought legal advice.
Mr Tutera said, although he was in a bad place, the thought of becoming a father kept him going.
‘I have always wanted to be a dad. That was really important to me,’ he added.
He and his ex, both based in Los Angeles, parted ways on New Year’s day, this year.
Soon after, they got embroiled in a bitter court battle as they struggled to come up with a suitable arrangement for their son and daughter, born on June 19.
Mr Jurica even accused his former partner of using prostitutes to feed his sex addiction at one point, in a bid to win authority over both newborns.
But Mr Tutera, revealed in the latest issue of People magazine that the feud is finally over and he was elected custodial parent of daughter Cielo, who is biologically his.
‘Now at home, her room is like a temple. It’s a very calm environment,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Cielo’s brother Cedric was placed with his biological father, 35-year-old Mr Jurica.
Mr Tutera, who counts Elton John, Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Lopez among his clients, explained that things moved so quickly ‘there wasn’t time to mourn the loss of a second child.’
‘It was such a confusing time.’
He says that although he hasn’t spoken to his ex since the twin’s delivery, he hopes that they can reconcile their differences for the sake of the children.
‘It would be so unfair of me if I were to say Cielo can’t see her brother because of what happened between Ryan and me.’
And it appears Mr Jurica feels the same way. In a separate interview with People he stated that he [extra space] ‘wants [the twins] to be in each other’s lives.’
Mr Tutera and Mr Jurica’s children were conceived via gestational surrogacy using eggs from an anonymous donor and sperm from both men.
As a result, although they are twins, they have different biological fathers.
Mr Tutera and Mr Jurica, who had a civil union in Vermont in September 2003 and later registered as domestic partners in California, had been trying for several years to start a family.
They had given up hope, but six weeks before they broke up they found out that a surrogate had become pregnant with their twins.
Despite their relationship coming to an end they decided to go through with the pregnancy.
However in April, things turned nasty as Mr Jurica filed legal documents in which he alleged that the couple separated due to Mr Tutera’s sex addiction and penchant for hiring prostitutes.
‘After repeated attempts at marriage counseling and therapy, we have been unable to save our relationship due to [David's] addiction to sex,’ read a section of the documents filed by Mr Jurica.
‘[David] has engaged in a pattern of hiring sex escorts and prostitutes to support his addiction.’
Along with custody of the unborn children, Mr Jurica also asked for financial support from his former spouse.
But Mr Tutera fought against both requests. He said he was heartbroken by his ex’s ‘false accusations’.
‘I don’t really understand why that’s done, the only thing I can think is that it’s done because of being upset. The process of the divorce has been quite challenging,’ he surmised on the View.
He told People that the real reason for their break-up was that they ended up going in ‘two separate directions.’
‘My brides all have this vision of what happiness is, and the odds are that it doesn’t happen. I’m one of the statistics now.’
Now his priority is being a good parent and he hopes to find romance again one day.
‘There’s something very enlightening about being a single father,’ he concluded. ‘Cielo brings me incredible joy.’
