ALL SOULS (LANGHAM PLACE)
All souls believes a personal relationship with God through Christ is at the heart of who we all are and we are dependent on his Spirit and prayer. They believe the Bible is God’s living and active Word and see it as central to all they do as a Church.
This is the ethos of a ministry recognising the modern world can be a fast moving, sometimes complicated and ever changing environment. As such they’ve set out to attract new worshippers by offering a warm and welcoming place to come and join together with fellow Christians. With this new breed of church comes a clear message about evolving on a global scale and their work with World Mission is a perfect testament to this.
It actually started life as one of the “WaterlooChurches” built to express the nation’s thanksgiving to God for victory over Napoleon. In more recent times All Souls has mostly been an active, evangelical church enabling people to worship simply and within their own special community. In the 21st century this charismatic organisation has more than 2,500 worshippers from across the world. This is what makes it such a colourful place. Proof positive we are all connected regardless of creed or background.
There are 4 Sunday services and a whole range of activities aimed at keeping the whole community involved, but more importantly to keep the Christian message strong and use it within the daily lives of those people involved.
Their innovative apprentice scheme has been noted as ground breaking developed to provide a more intensive training in gospel ministry for those showing leadership potential. It combines Biblical and theological training with hands-on ministry experience alongside a member of the staff team in a particular sphere of church life. This drive to spot and bring on potential leaders makes for a refreshing approach and of course it fits in perfectly with the overall Christian message.
All Souls prides itself on the fact their church is a very safe place for people to ask natural questions and engage their belief in God. With this in mind the Church runs Christianity Explored, a course specifically designed to engage with questions at the same time as exploring the central claims of the Christian message.
Going to such an impressive church for the first time can be a daunting experience for people, but here in London they have special open nights designed to give individuals a feel of what they can expect. Getting involved in small groups to begin with can give anyone a gentle induction and bring them into this very special Christian community feeling very comfortable. The main church building contains all the facilities you would expect from a forward moving organisation, all tailored toward the family.
All Souls are committed to serving the society around them and speaking Christ into it, and so to maintaining and developing their networks into it. We may live in an age where traditional congregational numbers are decreasing, but this thoroughly modern approach to worship is bringing new people into the fold.
Modern day Christianity means making people feel they have a responsibility to each other both spiritually and in terms of carrying the message of the bible and engaging this in their everyday lives. This involves networking and resisting what is incompatible to Christ in our culture. Modern worship is about letting people be themselves and giving them both flexibility and a new awareness of what God’s message is all about.
All Souls ‘Quiet Days’ are designed to give individuals the opportunity to give God their undivided attention and reflect on their lives in the light of his Word and respond in prayer. These days include an introductory thought from scripture and some suggested ways to spend quiet time. After a few hours on your own, worshippers come together for a meal, fellowship and reflection. Each year they also offer a Quiet Half Day designed for those who have never attended a Quiet Day in the past.
There’s nothing quiet about the way Churches like All Souls are spreading the Christian message in a world looking for enlightenment. They are in every sense a cornerstone of modern worship.
